2008 Heirloom Tomato Varieties

All of our tomatoes are grown naturally from open-pollinated seeds, most of the varieties are 50 years old or older. We start the plants in our glass greenhouse and sell the plants from Mid-May in our farmgate shop. Fresh tomatoes are also available in season.

Baxter's Bush Cherry - Early
Tasty and firm 1" dramatic red cherry. Vigorous and productive determinate plant.

Big Rainbow - Mid-season
Indeterminate, huge golden fruit with red streaks. One of the other better gold/red bi-colors and does well in the north. Superb sweet flavor.

Black Cherry - Early to Mid-season
Rare, true cherry tomato, with black skin. Inside is deep red, with blackish hues. Flavour is sweet with some of the smokiness of the Black Krim.

Black Krim – Late
Medium sized mahogany colored fruits, interior is a muddy reddish brown. Wonderful slightly smoky, salty taste.

Champagne - Early to Mid-season
Very pale yellow almost white tomato, 1/2” wide and grows in clusters. It is similar to Matt’s Wild cherry but not as heavy yielding.

Deutscher Fleiss – Early
German heirloom with potato leaf foliage. Red 2-4 oz fruits have nice sweet flavour. Remains firm when fully ripe and is crack resistant.

Garden Peach - Early
This peach-like yellow fruit is fuzzy with a pink blush, very mild tasting and is a good keeper. Vigorous vines produce an abundant supply of tomates.

Green Zebra – Late
ndeterminate - 3 oz chartreuse fruits with dark green stripes. Sweet, juicy and mild flavor. Very productive plants.

Hillbilly - Late
A huge bi-colour (bright yellow with red marbling), good slicer. Rich sweet flavour. Said to originate from West Virginia.

Lime Green Salad - Early to Mid-season
Small to medium size yellow-green tomato with nice flavour - great in salads.

Mennonite – Mid-season
Meaty beefsteak type with very small seed cavities; excellent slicing tomato with orangey colour and sweet flavour.

Purple Calabash - Late
Another unusually indeterminate, which has been called the ugliest tomato in the world. Fruit is large, 3-6”, convoluted and brownish pink in colour. Its saving grace is the excellent flavour and ability to tolerate extreme drought conditions. 4-6’ vines.

Purple Russian - Mid-season

From the Ukraine, this purplish, uniform, egg-shaped tomato is great for salsa, salads and preserving. Unbelievable flavour in blemish-free fruits. Very productive vines

Red Belly - Late
Very large fruit up to 2lbs, yellow with red bottom and red stripes going up. Mild not acidy flavour, not prone to rot like some larger tomatoes.

Red Pear - Late
Very old variety - 1800s. Productive long 6' vines. Red, pear shaped, juicy tomatoes.

Striped German - Mid-season
A real gem, uniquely bicoloured red and yellow. The interior is marbled red and yellow. 1–2 lb fruits on compact vines. The flavour is superb....well worth growing. Indeterminate.

Stupice - Very Early and very popular
Indeterminate tall, spindly, potato leaf plant with very heavy set of 2-4 oz. deep red globes, tends toward yellow shoulders late in the season, great flavor, This is a real garden mainstay.

Superfantastic – Early
An all-around beautiful tomato with excellent flavour and attractive red 4-6 oz fruit on 2 ft vines.

Tigerella
Black medium sized tomato. Russian variety.

Tomatillos
Larger than ground cherries, 2–3" husked green fruit with a flavour like a slightly sweet green tomato. Used in green salsa with hot peppers and coriander. Fruits should be washed in a mild soap and rinsed to remove the sticky coating. Bushy 3–4 ft. tall plant. Very prolific producer.

White Queen - Mid-season

3–3.5" in diameter. Vigorous vines produce very well. White skin and pale flesh with delicious flavour. Consided the most beautiful white tomato.

Yellow Cherry - Mid-season
A productive yellow cherry tomato with 6 ft. vines. Excellent taste.

Yellow Pear – Late
Indeterminate, small yellow to golden 1-2oz fruit that resemble small pears.
